Five Oldies That You Will Like
Aug 11, 2008 Songs
Rock and roll started getting extremely popular in the late 60s, but there are still a few older songs that need recognition as early rock and roll hits. These songs helped laid the foundation of the rock and roll to come. No particular order here, because they are all on the same level.
The Ronettes - Be My Baby
Without a doubt their most popular song, Be My Baby was written in 1963, but to this day still is a great song. In fact, it was in an episode of The Wonder Years. Can you name which?
Dion - Runaround Sue
Runaround Sue is a song by Dion, written in 1961, that talks of a man’s ex-girlfriend who went around town sleeping with other guys. That’s where the word ‘runaround’ came into play. It was actually a #1 hit in 1961, but I doubt you’ll be surprised after you listen to the song.
The Four Seasons - Sherry
This 1962 hit remained at the #1 spot for five weeks, but that is expected from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. It’s only 2:32, yet still is awesome.
The Beach Boys - Don’t Worry Baby
Written in 1964, this song was actually a tribute to The Ronettes hit Be My Baby. However, it has a slightly (yet equally great) sound. Probably my favorite Beach Boys song, it is definitely a classic.
The Shangri-Las - Leader of the Pack
This is a typical high school drama song, about a girl who had to break up with the leader of a motorcycle gang and then died in an accident when he rode away. Very catchy, and was actually the #1 song for a week.
